An Unusual Use For A Money Transfer Service

A reader recently contacted us to tell us this short story about their money transfer issue and how they used a companies money transfer services to get out of a scrape. It is quite a resourceful idea and has worked several times apparently. Although not entirely recommended and really quite costly...still if you get caught in a tight spot then maybe it is an idea to consider.

Imagine you are in Asia working, you went there after a failed marriage and business venture in the US as such you have limited funds to get by on with but are working in S.E Asia now on a tight budget. It is running toward the end of the month yet payday seems about as far away as it ever could be with two weekends lying in between now and payday.

With no money left in his local bank account and his one credit card refusing to work due to a faulty magnetic strip our man is wandering down the street determined that he shall not go without a few beers at the weekend. Still how to get money off of his credit card. His mind is stuck for an answer until he sees a western union money transfer sign outside a shop window. After initial en-quires he realises that it is possible to transfer money overseas using Western Union's online money transfer service.

After seeking out a internet cafe he goes through the registration process and then starts the process to send money. However his initial attempts to transfer money were blocked since you are unable to transfer money to yourself. Not having any immediate trust worthy friends in the vicinity he decides to pursue other options. Slightly annoyed by the beer fridge that he can just see on the other side of the road he is nevertheless inspired by a bottle of Tiger beer to put his middle initial 'T' at the end of his first name and send it to that person, doing this means the computer considers it to be a different name. Doing this he manages to put the electronic transaction through.

On going to collect the online money transfer the agent doesn't bat and eyelid even though his passport name doesn't exactly match (by one letter) the name of the supposed receiver of the western union money transfer. So, I guess the moral of the story is if you are really stuck and don't mind paying a hideous fee twice (for the western union fee and the credit card advance fee) then why not send money to yourself abroad?
